2019 SEASON ANNOUNCED

June 4 - July 28, 2019

Miami Classical Music Festival, an intensive training program for the next generation of classical musicians, announces the lineup for the 2019 season from June 4 through July 28, 2019 with over 50 performances this summer.

Over 300 young classical musicians gain bring enchanting and passionate performances to Miami’s summer season. Opera Productions include the South Florida Premiere of Nico Muhly's Dark Sisters, Golijov's Ainadamar; Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and a Family production of The Magic Flute.

The acclaimed MMF Wagner Institute returns with MMF’s debut at the Adrienne Arsht Ziff Ballet Opera House with a production of The Flying Dutchman.

Audiences will also enjoy the return of the 3rd Annual Independence Day Celebration with the MMF Symphony Orchestra, featuring popular and patriotic symphonic favorites and 2 large symphony performances of Mahler’s 5th Symphony and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Our Faculty Recital series includes performances by Anton Nel, Daniel Shapiro, Alexandre Moutouzkine and a faculty chamber music recital led by renowned Cellist Emilio Colon.

MMF is also excited to be performing numerous concerts and Pop Up events at The Betsy-South Beach, Miami Music Festival’s host hotel and sponsor as well as on Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive this summer, blanketing Miami Beach with rich classical music.

MMF Opera Double Bill

DARK SISTERS BY NICO MUHLY

Enjoy a double bill evening where two 21st Century operas! The South Florida Premiere of Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters will explore the inner lives of five sister wives married to a patriarch in the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints Church. After state officials take custody of their children, the wives struggle to find their place in the family as their husband instructs them to “keep sweet”.

Golijov’s Ainadamar is the story of the Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca and his muse, Margarita Xirgu, as they navigate the treacherous beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

The Magic Flute 

by W.a. mozart

A hero on a quest and a princess finding her way encounter enchanted creatures, an evil queen and ultimately, each other – all with the help of a Magic Flute! A part of MMF’s popular Family Opera series, this production is created specifically for young children and will be performed with English Dialogue and Sung in german with English Supertitles. Mozart’s classic “singspiel” includes both spoken and sung dialogue, with familiar melodies you’ll be singing along to. Families are invited to participate in free supplementary activities for children. Allow your children to experience opera and live theater in a family-friendly setting.

The Marriage of Figaro 

by w.a. mozart

One of Mozart’s most beloved works gets a classic retelling, bringing to Miami the music and characters that have captured the hearts of opera lovers the world over. Servants Figaro and his promised Susanna prepare for their upcoming wedding, only to find that his employer the Count has impure intentions for her as well. Fearing that the Count will reinstate the ancient First Night rite to rendezvous with her, Figaro sets about scheming to outsmart the him. Meanwhile, the lovely Countess, to whom Susanna is ever faithful, begins to suspect the same and devises her own trap to catch him in his mischief. The classes battle in a light-hearted comedy sung in Italian by the MMF Opera Institute, which features some of Mozart’s most beautiful melodies ever written.

L'incoronazione di Poppea

by Claudio MontEverdi

Monteverdi’s final opera brings gods, love, and men in conflict as Emperor Nero Augustus plans to supplant his wife, the Empress Ottavia, with his lover, Poppea. Ottone, hopelessly in love with Poppea himself, realizes that he could not compete with the Emperor and proposes marriage to Drusilla, a noblewoman in the court of the Empress. When Ottavia summons Ottone and demands he kill Poppea, nothing short of divine intervention could stop the Empress’ revenge. MMF’s Opera Studio Program presents an intimate setting of this classic opera.

Symphony Orchestra Concert

Mahler Symphony No. 5

Miami Music Festival Symphony Orchestra

Written during a time of major upheaval for the composer, Mahler’s 5th Symphony is his most performed work— most famously, the fourth “Adagietto” movement was conducted by Leonard Bernstein for the funeral of Robert F. Kennedy. The MMF Orchestra brings this music to life in this one night only performance.

Symphony Orchestra Concert

Glinka, Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla 
Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring

Surrounded by intrigue and the infamous story of a riotous premiere, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring remains a popular piece of programmatic music to this day. The stirring and evocative motifs tell the story of a prehistoric ritual sacrifice of a young girl as she dances to death in front of the elders of her tribe. The MMF Orchestra brings this music to life in this one night only performance. In addition, the winners of the MMF Concerto Competition perform selected Classical and Romantic concertos with orchestral accompaniment.

Voted in the top ten performances of 2018 by the South Florida Classical Review, Music Music Festival’s Wagner Institute makes its debut at the Adrienne Arsht Ziff Ballet Opera House in a full performance of Wagner’s, The Flying Dutchman.

Inspired by a troubled sea voyage, The Flying Dutchman is the first of Wagner’s “Romantic Operas”. Set off the shores of Norway, Captain Daland and his crew come across a ghost ship that is captained by The Dutchman— condemned for all eternity for blasphemy. If The Dutchman can find a faithful wife, he will be saved. Daland’s daughter Senta agrees to the arrangement, but will a past suitor threaten The Dutchman’s salvation?

Armide

Written by the court composer of Louis XIV and premiered for the Grand Dauphin, Armide is the story of a Damascene Princess and the Crusader that she falls in love with. Princess Armide is a sorcerer sent to kill Renaud, an invading crusader. She falls in love with him instead, casting a spell on him so that he loves her back. When she comes to regret her decision, will anything short of divine intervention turn her heart? MMF’s Opera Studio Program presents an intimate setting of this classic opera.

Daniel Shapiro continues to gain recognition as a leading interpreter of Schubert, Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, and Beethoven, and as a teacher and coach at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has given critically acclaimed recitals and concerto appearances across the US, and in Brazil, Europe, Korea, and China.  He has twice performed Beethoven's 32-sonata cycle (live performances of all the sonatas can be found on youtube.com), and his CD of Beethoven’s “Diabelli” Variations and DVDs of Schubert sonatas have received enthusiastic reviews.

Alexandre Moutouzkine, Piano

Russian-American pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine has toured throughout Europe, Russia, North and South America, China, and Japan. He has appeared as soloist with the Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, Radio Television Orchestra of Spain, Cleveland Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic, Valencia Philharmonic, National Symphonic Orchestra of Panama, National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba, Israel Philharmonic, and many others. International Piano Magazine hailed one performance as “grandly organic, with many personal and pertinent insights, offering a thoughtful balance between rhetoric and fantasy…technically dazzling.” The winner of many renowned piano competition awards, Mr. Moutouzkine has claimed top prizes at the Walter W. Naumburg, Cleveland, Montreal, and Arthur Rubinstein international competitions, among others. Miami Music Festival welcomes Alexandre Moutouzkine as part of our distinguished faculty in this one-night-only performance.

Zarzuela in the Summer Nights

Scenes from the MMF Zarzuela Project

One of the great subgenres of the operatic art form is the Zarzuela, Spanish operetta from Spain, Cuba, and the greater Latin American repertoire. Each season, select MMF Opera Institute vocalists are coached in the style of this romantic genre and bring the familiar melodies to the community with each performance. Standards like Lecuona’s Maria, la O, and Lara’s tenor favorite Granada will have audience members humming along in the return of our beloved concert series.
