A governess in the English countryside finds her new position and young charges entangled in disturbing relations, haunted by their past. With a gothic ghost story for it’s source, this provocative story is matched by its cerebral score. Mixing elements of tonality and dissonance, Britten’s final chamber opera is an exploration in 12-tone figures, summed up by a line borrowed from W.B. Yeats – “the ceremony of innocence is drowned.”
