Opera Conducting Institute

Session 1
June 6 – July 1, 2018

Session 2
July 4 – July 29, 2018

MMF offers a unique opportunity for conductors wishing to expand their experience specifically in the opera field. The Opera Conducting Program is available to five conductors in 2018, each assigned to a single opera production as a cover conductor. Cover conductors work directly with the principal conductor and will be required to fill in when needed.

The Opera Conducting Institute focuses on the complete opera production process, with emphasis on the art of conducting singers in music and staging rehearsals. Cover conductors gain valuable experience working through the entire opera production process and collaborating with singers, directors and stage managers.

Distinct from the profile of the MMF Conducting Institute, the Opera Conducting Institute offers no guaranteed podium time before the orchestra, however participants are occasionally asked to conduct stagings, full piano tech rehearsals, and the orchestra while the principal conductor listens for balance. Cover conductors also have access to special classes with opera conducting faculty on the techniques needed to conduct Act I of La Boheme. Please visit the MMF Opera Institute for 2018 opera repertoire.
