by Giacomo Puccini

MMF Opera Institute takes on one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire with a timeless rendition of Puccini’s La bohème. MMF Family Opera Series

L' ENFANT et les SORTILÈGES
(The child and the magic spells)

by Maurice Ravel

This whimsical French one-act translating to “The child and the magic spells” is the first of MMF’s popular Family Opera series. In a world where furniture, fire and animals come to life, Ravel’s dreamy lyric score spins a modern fable with an ageless message. Staged as a double-bill performance with Puccini’s one-act Gianni Schicchi, families are invited to participate in free supplementary activities for children outlined below! Allow your children to experience opera and live theater in a family-friendly setting.

GIANNI SCHICCHI

by Giacomo Puccini

When an old curmudgeon dies, who inherits his fortune? In the aftermath of a wealthy man’s passing, Puccini’s one-act spins the uproarious tale of scheming relatives and one crafty neighbor, Gianni Schicchi. Based on a brief reference in Dante’s Inferno, this comic opera showcases a wonderfully verismo ensemble cast singing Puccini’s score full of humorous musical devices and features one of the most memorable arias in the operatic canon, “O mio babbino caro.”

ORCHESTRA SEASON OPENER
Mahler’s Symphony No. 6

Yuriy Bekker, conductor
MMF Symphony Orchestra

The MMF Symphony Orchestra opens the symphonic season with Mahler’s enigmatic Symphony No. 6 in A minor.  Nicknamed the “tragische” or “tragic” symphony, Mahler’s work is described as perhaps “the first nihilist work in the history of music.” Symphony No. 6 is an exciting exploration of contrasts and emotions, a challenging undertaking for this year’s symphonic debut.

THE TURN of the SCREW

by Benjamin Britten

A governess in the English countryside finds her new position and young charges entangled in disturbing relations, haunted by their past. With a gothic ghost novel for it’s source, this provocative story is matched by its cerebral score. Mixing elements of tonality and dissonance, Britten’s final chamber opera is an exploration in 12-tone figures, summed up by a line borrowed from W.B. Yeats – “the ceremony of innocence is drowned.”

*mature thematic material, suggested for audience ages 10+

MMF Symphony Orchestra

MMF honors legendary international violinist Ida Haendel and her illustrious career as one of history’s great musicians in this best-of festival concert with the festival’s reprise visit to South Beach’s New World Center. Orchestral student winners of the MMF Concerto Competition will perform in honor of Ms. Haendel. The concert will also feature the MMF Symphony Orchestra in Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, as well as the MMF Piano Institute’s Concerto Competition winner.

Inspired by Nietzsche's novel of the same name, Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus spoke Zarathustra) is a tone poem that evokes the vastness and philosophical posturing of Nietzsche. The iconic opening five note theme of the “Sunrise” fanfare is among the most recognized in classical music, and featured in the Stanley Kubrick film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In keeping with MMF's commitment to the performance of the work of living composers, Miami Dade County's Superintendent of Schools, Alberto Carvalho, will orate the world premiere of a new work by award-winning composer, Jeffery Briggs, set to the poetry of three-time Pulitzer-prize finalist, Hyam Plutzik (1911-62).

THE CRUCIBLE

by Robert Ward

An allegory for our modern times: hysterics, politics and who’s to blame? Arthur Miller’s dramatized account of the Salem witch trials is updated in MMF’s riveting production to a gripping and provocative present day social commentary. A cautionary tale of history, American composer Robert Ward expertly crafts a musical backdrop of fear, mistrust and the tragic fallout.
